fredmciverslovechild Posted Tuesday at 10:36 Posted Tuesday at 10:36 I'm not sure that "betrayal" is the right word but interesting anyway. 1

Daveyboy66 Posted Tuesday at 11:03 Posted Tuesday at 11:03 (edited) Watching him as a ten year old I thought all keepers caught the ball instead of pushing it away like the rest of them did. I remember him at Wembley as we beat the jocks 9-3 prompting my response to any of my jock army buddies when they they asked me the time... " nine past Haffey " the unfortunate Scotland keeper that day. And us beating the Rest of The world Team with my other favourite England here jimmy Greaves scoring the winner . There was a brilliant photo of him in one of the Sunday papers...in the snow away at Burnley...it was taken from the sidelines and showed him horizontal just under the bar catching the ball as he plucked it out of the top corner. I've tried all over to find it but never did. RIP Ron xx Edited Tuesday at 11:08 by Daveyboy66 3 3
torryowl Posted Tuesday at 11:05 Posted Tuesday at 11:05 Nice to see him remembered but seems a bit of a mushy video and not a clue about how he was betrayed .....
Popular Post Kevan Posted Tuesday at 11:07 Popular Post Posted Tuesday at 11:07 He was Wednesday's keeper when I first went to Hillsborough in 1965 and he's still the best we've had. RIP Ron 3 9
Jackie Sewell Posted Tuesday at 12:03 Posted Tuesday at 12:03 i know the goalkeepers job has changed (apart from keeping the ball out of the net), but before it did, I always said Ron Springett was the best keeper I'd ever seen. I thought he was better than Banks. As was said above, he caught every cross, no punching, without gloves. In the days when centre forwards could barge the goalie too. And he was only 5-9. His shot stopping was unreal. And , guess what, goalies never sat down injured in the last few minutes. Ron had a painting and decorating business in London, so he never moved to Sheffield, training instead with his previous club, QPR . So we didn't need a goalkeeping coach. He used to travel up on the train friday night, and Fantham would pick him up from his hotel, as he was one of the few players with a car. Oh sorry, Kay had an old van. 3 4
Flying V Posted Tuesday at 12:04 Posted Tuesday at 12:04 First saw him around 1962, and got his autograph in 1965. great keeper.
REDOWL Posted Tuesday at 12:07 Posted Tuesday at 12:07 One of our all time greats without question. 3
torryowl Posted Tuesday at 12:13 Posted Tuesday at 12:13 Unlike these days where if your one of the few English keepers in the prem you'll more than likely pick up a few caps there was a lot of competition when Ron was in his prime and to be the most capped keeper in English history at the time tells you good he was .....took one of the world greats to knock him off the number 1 spot . 2
dehowl Posted Tuesday at 12:57 Posted Tuesday at 12:57 He’s far and away the best goalkeeper I’ve ever seen play for us. 6
REDOWL Posted Tuesday at 12:58 Posted Tuesday at 12:58 From the match day programme v Bristol Rovers on Saturday 23rd March 1991. 2
Popular Post Magic Rat Posted Tuesday at 13:23 Popular Post Posted Tuesday at 13:23 My all time favourite Wednesday player, our keeper when I started going to Hillsborough in the 60s. Had his picture on my wall from the centre of Football Monthly for years. The caption read “Ron Springett-Sheffield Wednesday and England”. It was an era when playing for England was much more prestigious than it is now. Remembering that caption today still sends a shiver down my spine. This Club and it’s heritage is so precious. 1 10
longreach Posted Tuesday at 13:27 Posted Tuesday at 13:27 A song that was sung on the Kop (1966+/-) was (The song is commonly known by words from the refrain, "Canta y no llores", or simply as the "Ay, Ay, Ay, Ay song". "Ay Ay Ay Ay, Spingett is better than Yashin, United are a load of crap and so is Wynne Davis! Odd wasn't it!!
