Watching him as a ten year old I thought all keepers caught the ball instead of pushing it away like the rest of them did. I remember him at Wembley as we beat the jocks 9-3 prompting my response to any of my jock army buddies when they they asked me the time... " nine past Haffey " the unfortunate Scotland keeper that day. And us beating the Rest of The world Team with my other favourite England here jimmy Greaves scoring the winner . There was a  brilliant photo of him in one of the Sunday papers...in the snow away at Burnley...it was taken from the sidelines and showed him horizontal just under the bar catching the ball as he plucked it out of the top corner. I've tried all over to find it but never did. RIP Ron xx

i know the goalkeepers job has changed (apart from keeping the ball out of the net), but before it did, I always said Ron Springett was the best keeper I'd ever seen. I thought he was better than Banks. As was said above, he caught every cross, no punching, without gloves. In the days when centre forwards could barge the goalie too. And he was only 5-9. His shot stopping was unreal. And , guess what, goalies never sat down injured in the last few minutes.

Ron had a painting and decorating business in London, so he never moved to Sheffield, training instead with his previous club, QPR 😲. So we didn't need a goalkeeping coach. He used to travel up on the train friday night, and  Fantham would pick him up from his hotel, as he was one of the few players with a car. Oh sorry, Kay had an old van.

Unlike these days where if your  one of the few English keepers in the prem you'll more than likely pick up a few caps there was a lot of competition when Ron was in his prime  and to be the most capped keeper in English history at the time tells you good he was .....took one of the world greats to knock him off the number 1 spot .
