My early impression of this thread was that Neil was using it to create an "Owlstalk Discussion" as he has done so many times previously, a view which was reinforced by the appearance of the "Piegate Scandal" title.
Peter, in his attempts to support the Academy, has set up a couple of Hirsty's Bar events and has received support and encouragement from staff at SWFC. As I understand it, he was originally quoted a price for the event which was thought, at the time, likely to put people off. A decision was made to leave out the food option this time and get the events under way as soon as possible in the hope that the attendance would be as high as it has been in the past.
The event was advertised on the Wednesdayite web site and in the Match day programme and an email was sent out to previous attendees. A message was also posted on here. If that had not been done, there may have been some comment (from Neil perhaps) that it could have been done much better by Owlstalk.
Anyway - it seems simple to me. If people are happy to pay the reduced ticket price and attend, they will do so and whilst enjoying the evening, will be contributing to the SWFC Academy and Community funds. If they don't wish to attend because they will not be getting the pie and peas ( or for any other reason) they won't buy a ticket. It is entirely up to each person to make the choice.
It is a pity that the section about the alternative fans group has been removed. Comparing this thread with what was being posted in that section would give plenty of food (not pie of course) for thought and might help to explain why people walked away from that. After all these years, I am still amazed that such arguments are provoked by the efforts of a few people to provide a service for fellow fans whether political, non-political (and I still have problems working out what the differences were) or even fun, in close collaboration with the club. At the end of the day attendance at events, use of services, membership etc are not compulsory.
James, with respect, Peter has a point. As other people have found, when discussion turns into circular argument or becomes irrational or even abusive, it ceases to be discussion.
"So...
Wednesdayite have Hirsty's Bar taken off them
The club decide to do it
They scrap the pie and peas
The excuse is they want to 'concentrate on getting interesting guests' instead
What a crock of total bullshit"
Posts like that are not "reasonable debate". Sadly they give justification for walking away. It isn't necessarily "retreating into the bunkers" as you describe it. It could be just be getting back to the real work of sorting out the things which need attention, something which people rightly point out and which are properly taken notice of.
