He was the player holding possession at the top of the 18 yard box with three Brummies on him, completely isolated, while no other Wednesday player made a move to support or get into space for twenty seconds.... -
Nothing on the face of it, but it's moreseo speaking to the point that we can't try to emulate teams like that which are carrying all the advantages, and I mean that on the pitch and off of the pitch. The keys to Brighton's success extend far beyond utilising some analytics - which I would imagine we are already doing up, down, forward, and sideways; just like every other professional club from the National League on upward these days. I will add that it's extremely unlikely that we can out moneyball the teams which are spending more on analytics than our transfer budget and wage bill combined. These days Championship and PL clubs even use Football Manager's rankings and database in an effort to improve their data gathering and press the advantage any way they can. A tangible advantage was to be had back in 2010, but just like the novelty of scouting and signing foreign players in the mid-1990s, the other teams quickly caught up and now it's part of every club's regular routine. I don't disagree with the rest of the premise of your post though. Continuity, and building to something cohesively is what needs to happen.

Miracle he's still on the pitch, based on how he was rolling around after that pen shout. Thought they'd have to amputate at the knee. .... but you're right. Floating. -

Southgate took one look at that first half with creativity and chances created, and promptly put a stop to that as part of the half-time instructions. Back to normal. -
Have you ever doubted a new signing from day 1?
Indoor Owl replied to WimJunk's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
Van Aken could have been brilliant as part of a proper back five, pushing up and bringing the ball out of defence and working it to the flanks. He's not suited to playing without cover. Still feel like that was a missed opportunity, would have been interesting if he could have kept the ankle in shape. Boyd and Marco Matias are two others brought down by injuries. Matias is interesting - he's played more matches in the last two years at 35 than he did in like five years at Wednesday. -
So all we need is a boyhood fan of the club with family that were long time club executives to become a billionaire and dump a few hundred million pounds into getting things up and running? Seems quick and easy...

While I'm not sure about Director of Football, which really is a transfer and contract management, and relationship role first and foremost; I'd like to see Liam Palmer in an executive role in some capacity: A player that had been in the youth system and U23s, has weathered a storm of ownership, managerial, and league changes, and even some (limited) international experience. Oh the broader subject of coaching and management, I think ownership moves on from managers far too quickly these days in sport in general. No time to build a culture, no time to build a system, no time to properly recruit. If Röhl actually intends to commit, I'd love a contract with a compensation clause that makes it very difficult for ownership to move on from in less than five years. Similarly, if Röhl jumps ship (I fully expect him to leverage moderate success in the coming season into a move back to Germany), I for one would really like to see someone like Carlos return and be given control, time, and opportunity. Six years. Control to imprint a culture, bring in players, and even get the youth squads aligned and on board tactically and technically. I want a manager with some personality, flair, and vision to have time to build something. Even if it means a few difficult seasons. Not just another nobody trying to get the team pressing and playing as if we're Manchester City or Liverpool - we're not. And won't be. Way too many managers trying to manage as if they have Pep or Klopp's players and payroll to work with, and trying to play PL and CL football with League One and Championship players and facilities.

Urby Emanuelson. I tired to warm up to it and consider possibilities. Pointless. He played sixteen minutes. -

SUNDERLAND -V- WEDNESDAY (Play off 1st Leg) OMDT
Indoor Owl replied to Lord Snooty's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
I would love to see a Wednesday player control a ******** ball when a floater is coming and they are in space, instead of just thumping a random header directly back to Sunderland. Slow it down and control the ball for a moment. Jesus. Take a breath. Hold onto the ball. Move players up the pitch. Get it to Bannan. -

Had five Wednesday players within three or four yards of each other, doing nothing at the top of the 18 yard box... Berahino completely isolated on the wing there. Going to get punished at this rate -
League One Playoff Dates Confirmed
Indoor Owl replied to @owlstalk's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
(Non) buyer's remorse over here: I had recently changed jobs and so have been absolutely swamped, but finally resolved to get away in May. Was planning to come over for the first two weeks with the hopes that I could catch a play-off game or two. Went full bed-wetter (and also acquiesced to the wife wanting somewhere warm) and cancelled the arrangements thinking we wouldn't make it in back in February. Regretting it! -
In other news - Is Carlos on his way back to England?
Indoor Owl replied to @owlstalk's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
I've always been surprised that someone on the Chansiri team didn't have the wisdom to put recently crumpled £20 notes in a plastic sleeve with a picture of Carlos on them, and sell them for £30. -

I assume in the same way that I have a choice in what my wife makes for dinner: This, or nothing and "this isn't a ******* restaurant". If you're given the choice between Jordan Rhodes because big-brains in the administration think he's a splashy and high profile choice (some say there are even still posters on Owlstalk, sitting at home rocking back and forth and incoherently mumbling "... scores for fun at this level" to this very day...), and nothing; you're going to take Jordan Rhodes. Not the same as having 10m in transfer budget available and at your disposal. -

I'd like to see what Carlos could do given full control if he ever came back. And I'd really like to have a time machine to be able to go back and see how things would have shaken out if he had the control back then, and with the funds available to him to use at his own discretion instead of having it pissed away in £10m chunks a'la Jordan Rhodes. -

If Carlos Carvalhal was Darren Moore, there would be weekly threads bemoaning that he ever left. If he was "Carl Cardsworth" from Midlands, supporters would have pooled their funds and commissioned a statue of him by now, and there would be dedicated threads to his return that make would dwarf the Megson memes. -
Wrong Tactics (All Season )

Strong contender for best post of the year here "If we get promoted, first things first, let's fire the manager". Unbelievable stuff. -

I know there might be some strange notion that still persists that football exists only in the UK (possibly only in England and Scotland), and everything else outside is just the unwashes masses of rabble knocking a ball about, practice style.... ... but it's pretty unlikely that he's going leave a side that's winning one league cup and losing in the finals in another, and playing for Champions League spots in the Europa quarter finals to come for team on the edge of relegation in the Championship, ha. -

Wycombe - Wednesday - OMDT
Indoor Owl replied to Lord Snooty's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
This is too much of an ask. They've gone in deep, short, and floated to the middle. Not a single Wednesday shirt in the air to challenge, keeper just strolling out to the six yard to gather. Delivery not the issue, effort on the end of it is.
