Not saying Steve isn’t a perfectly fine name, as King Stephen of England, Steve ‘interesting’ Davis and Umpire Steve Buckner would surely all atest, but can you have too much of a good Steve thing?

Player Ratings v Coventry

Cheers. My plans for yesterday were blown off course. I’ll sent up a poll if any mod wants to merge -
What's your thoughts on Dave's opinion here?

I think we tend to forget all the boring games in the past. Especially before the back pass law was brought in and teams could just see out wins passing it back to their keeper. But definitely agree that VAR is shîte and should be binned. Definitely prefer 80% correct decisions made in the moment over 90% correct decisions made after a tedious wait and with no one in the crowd none the wiser as to what is going on. -

To be fair to Chansiri he has neglected the ground just as much as the team. -

We broke the world transfer record in the 1950s to sign (I think) Jackie Sewell -
That kit suits him.

Palmer will be useful for us next season in League One if we can afford to pay him. He was very good during the last promotion season.

Wednesday's best 1-50

You could have Shefki Kuqi as 28 and Ryan Lowe at 30 if you prefer -
Wednesday's best 1-50

So I only picked my squad from 93-94 onwards as that’s when having a squad number for the season came in (apart from the two cup finals in 93 where squad numbers were piloted, which is how John Harkes sneaks in) -
Gonna go high considering Pompey have only lost 6 games at home since getting promoted and we all know about our threadbare squad. Horvath: 9 Palmer: 8 Iorfa: 8 Weaver: 8 M. Lowe: 9 Amass: 8 Valery: 8 Bannan: 9.5 Ingelsson: 7.5 Cadamarteri: 7.5 Brown: 8 J. Lowe: 7 Fusire: 6.5 Ugbo: 6.5 Ricardo (ref): 6

Wednesday's best 1-50

Or if you wanted to go off the wall and collect a 1-48 of oddities, freaks and 'did they really wear that number?' you can go with: 1 – Brad Jones 2 – Joe Wildsmith 3 – Jon Beswetherick 4 – Kenny Lunt 5 – David Hirst (who actually scored in an FA Cup final wearing number 5) 6 – Steven Fletcher 7 – Adem Poric 8 – Oguchi Onyewu (If feels like sacrilege that Joey Pelupessy actually wore Chris Waddle's number 8, but nothing beats having a massive centre-half wearing 9 – Kim Olsen (Adam Reach wasn't your 'classic 9' either...) 10 – Darren Potter 11 – Sergiu Bus 12 – Rocky Lekaj 13 – Barry Richardson (Martin Hodge was also listed as a number 13 on wikipedia - can anyone confirm if he was on the bench in the early 2000s at any stage?) 14 – Kim Olsen 15 – Kenwyne Jones (as you can be pretty sure he'd have scored wearing it) 16 – Ibrahim Cissoko 17 – Michele Di Piedi 18 – Leon Clarke 19 – Shwan Jalal 20 – Tony Crane 21 – Ola Tidman 22 – O’Neill Donaldson 23 – Jay Bothroyd 24 – Zigor Aranalde 25 – David Billington 26 – Urby Emanuelson* 27 – Garry Monk 28 – Chris Carr 29 – Krystof Kotylo 30 – Tyreece John-Jules 31 – David Kasnik 32 – Neil Gibson 33 – Felipe Melo 34 – Sean Cuff 35 – Cecil Nyoni 36 – Alex Higgins (the 1998-99 SWFC Wikipedia page actually links to the snooker player!) 37 – Tom Staniforth (RIP) 38 – Matt Thorpe 39 – Isaac Rice 40 – Sylla Sow 41 – Almen Abdi 42 – Marnick Vermijl 43 – Paulo Aguas 44 – Dejan Kelhar 45 – Elias Kachunga 46 – George Hirst 47 – Pierce Charles 48 – James Murphy Some of these never got on the pitch, but they had a squad number printed on the programme and in many cases made the bench... so I think there must be a shirt for each of them in existence out there somewhere.... *Just to add that number 26 is a weird vortex of strange SWFC plays. Urby has to take the squad place - but I could also have picked World Cup Winner Emiliano Martinez, Bruce Grobbelaar, Trevor Francis wore it once in his last ever professional game, Orlando Trustfull, Dean Windass, Barry Horne, mystery man David Bates, Carlton (Leighton) Palmer, 42-year-old Eric Nixon, Jeremy Helan (before he found god), cult hero Michele Di Piedi, Will De Havilland, Barry Corr... basically any random oddball player for Wednesday has been number 26. -

So, I don't believe we've never had a number 49 or 50 - but if you were collecting a 'best ever' Wednesday squad from 1-48, I suggest you go with this.... 1 – Keiren Westwood 2 – Roland Nilsson 3 – Nigel Worthington 4 – Wim Jonk 5 – Nigel Pearson 6 – Glenn Whelan 7 – Paul Warhurst 8 – Chris Waddle 9 – David Hirst 10 – Mark Bright 11 – Paolo Di Canio 12 – Glenn Loovens 13 – Kevin Pressman 14 – Marc Degryse 15 – John Harkes 16 – John Sheridan 17 – Des Walker 18 – Dejan Stefanovic 19 – Lucas Joao 20 – Kieran Lee 21 – Ryan Jones 22 – Emerson Thome 23 – Carlton Palmer 24 – Jose Semedo 25 – Petter Rudi 26 – Niclas Alexandersson 27 – Michail Antonio 28 – Alan Quinn 29 – Liam Palmer 30 – Derek Geary 31 – Cameron Dawson 32 – Jack Hunt 33 – Pavel Srnicek 34 – Michael Hector 35 – Chris Brunt 36 – Daniel Pudil 37 – Lewis McGugan 38 – Achraf Lazaar 39 – Tommy Spurr 40 – Marcus Tudgay 41 – Barry Bannan 42 – Bailey Cadamarteri 43 – Stephen Bywater 44 – Shea Charles 45 – Fernando Forestieri 46 – Frederico Venancio 47 – Josh Windass 48 – Will Keane (with apologies to Chris Bart-Williams (14, but I think Degryse edges it) and Sam Hutchinson - who actually had 5 different squad numbers with us, but I couldn't find a space for him). Disagree? - here's most of your options for numbers.... https://www.transfermarkt.com/sheffield-wednesday/rueckennummern/verein/1035 -
I believe its only the second he's scored for us... so its got to be up there!

In a relegation battle it is better to have a keeper that is great one game and terrible the next, rather than a Wildsmith-style underwhelming but consistent every week keeper. Leeds and now Pompey, he’s already won us a couple of games.
