I did it when I was 15. I quickly packed in refereeing side, probably did 2 weeks of it, it wasn't worth it. I stuck with running the line senior games for a little bit longer, you could get $AU100 for 4 games in a day which was pretty good for a 15 year old. The advantage of running the lines instead of refereeing the kids was you would have an experienced Ref on your side.

The loss of more casual fans when Fox Sports lost the Premier League rights is something it never recovered from and I don’t think they’ve properly tried to address. It’s not necessarily failing when comparing it on an international level. If you look at crowds on a per capita basis it holds up well, I think 2nd to Japan in Asia and comparable a lot of European nations. That being an extremely narrow view of what failing may be.

It’s a criticism that comes up quite commonly about teams doing poorly have zero incentive to turn their season around. I’m pretty sure there is some form of prize minor for champions, premiers and cup winners. I don’t know the details of money distribution, but there is an emphasis on trying to make sure we don’t have a competition which only ever has one or two teams win it every season. If we ended up with a Scotland or France situation no one would bother with it. The paying three entities has been around since I was a kid and agree it’s idiotic. The costs and complexities around junior football in this country is ridiculous. Unfortunately it’s a case for it to change the first step is for State associations to vote to get rid of themselves and that’s never happening. Sport operates differently here to the UK. It isn’t a pseudo American thing, it’s an Australian thing. NRL and AFL have had finals and various different systems (Salary caps, catchment areas for players) in place for over 100 years. People are used to it here. Football in this country could do things differently, but the money available and the travel costs are hugely prohibitive. The A-League exists because 20 years ago the decision was made to put the NSL out of its misery. The NSL originally tried to be structured in a more traditional European sense, but had to try and change to survive and it struggled. The best way forward was decided to Australianise the competition, which had initial success. Should it always be this way? Hopefully not, but I don’t see it being in a position to change anytime in the near future.

I’d believe that’s true. Like in having the salary cap it would be to try and ensure the competition is as even as possible. Giving successful clubs more money means they are better placed to continue being successful and unsuccessful teams continue being unsuccessful. Central Coast may not even exist if coming last meant less money, as at one point they were spending at the salary cap floor to just survive. Is it really any more bonkers than teams getting millions the following seasons after being relegated from the Premier League?

In regards to Scott MacDonald, regardless of how the club is run it is a step up for him if he wants to give management a real go. Berisha as good as he was in the A-League he just doesn’t seem like he would be a good manager.

That second half was an awful watch. What I didn’t get about it is that surely Zadkovich needs a win, Wanderers were there for the taking. Roar’s two strikers, Waddingham and Own Goal, had already found the back of the net and could have scored more. Good result for Macarthur winning away at Wellington. A solid defensive display by Macarthur with Nix looking dangerous going forward with Rojas and Barbarouses. Sydney and Western United was a belter of a game. Especially with Western United winning and loved seeing Sydney getting riled up by the shithousery after Western scored the winner.

At least Wellington can say they were the first team to score a goal against Auckland.

I don’t get it either. See plenty wearing European club shirts. When I used to go to Wanderers games there was an older bloke who always wore a West Ham shirt. They are bums on seats so probably shouldn’t complain too much though.

I have actually heard the JAFA term before, but spoken rather than the acronym written down. Probably why that didn't click. Sounds like quality journalism. You’re going to have to explain that last sentence to me. As a neutral and in a different country I don’t see much coming from Wellington. My point about winning was more perhaps the crap I’ve seen is more to do with a team being on top where that subsection of the fanbase have to swing their dícks around rather than anything else, if you get what I mean. Appreciate that further insight into the rivalry. Continuing the off topic sport, where would a second NRL team go? Wellington? I thought rugby league was more of an Auckland thing. Bringing in more Australian ignorance. I think my thought process behind it is that in Australia the difference between the two rugby codes is pretty big, so you’d struggle to pull fans across.
