BREAKING NEWS - Portugal and Germany pre-season
bigsuffolkowl replied to s6 owl's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
You can also fly to Bremen from London Stansted (and it's much cheaper than flights to Hamburg). Bremen is about 60km south of Hamburg. First flight on Friday morning now £68 was £30 when I booked...Thursday morning still available at £15. Flights back from Bremen on Monday night about £20... Be aware - don't book a Sunday night flight back from Bremen (unless you plan to leave the game well early). Stay outside of Lubeck, Kiel & Hamburg for the cheapest hotel deals. Train travel (local trains only) will cost €24 for the day using a Niedersachsen lander (travel after 9am). Covers local transport (inc. Bus, tram, train & underground). Price goes up by €5 for every extra person added to the ticket (2 travelling together €29, 3 travelling €34).. Don't forget you are encouraged to drink beer in the stands at german football grounds. Smoking is also permitted in football grounds (not allowed on public transport) and just about every bar have smoking areas indoors. Ground at Lubeck is a 20 minute walk from the central station. Ground at Kiel is a 20 minute bus ride away (45 to 50 minutes walk) and given its is a friendly and on a Sunday - I doubt the normal matchday bus service will be in place. Holstein-Kiel game will be using VAR - as this is the test game before this is introduced into Bundesliga 2 for the first time this year -

Anybody checked out how the rest of the top 6 performed against Wigan away this season? Huddersfield won 1-0 (2 shots on target) Derby won 1-0 (1 shot on target) Newcastle won 2-0 (8 shots on target) Brighton won 1-0 (2 shots on target) Reading won 3-0 (4 shots on target) - one a penalty. us won 1-0 (1 shot on target) What you saw last night was common for everyone else (apart from Newcastle). They play a very tight formation and stop the opposition playing. That is part of the reason they have one of the best defensive records in the league. To be honest - Sky should have known what to expect in terms of selecting this game for TV. Seeing the above it was never going to be a 'pretty game to watch'. The important part was we got the 3 points and matched the result of those around us. -
Wembley Programme Pre Order
bigsuffolkowl replied to Pompeyowl's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
Programme seller booths are all over Wembley - both inside the ground and outside.. There is one on Wembley Way walking up - but the majority of those outside are on the upper tier (by the retaining wall) - walk up the ramp from Wembley Way and follow the wall around. If coming from Wembley Central or Stadium - then head to the upper level and follow the wall around. There are normally merchandise stalls there as well. There are programme vendor counters inside Wembley (between the food vendors and toilets) - look at the Stadium plan and these can be seen on all levels... Best option is take the first one you see if you want a programme...don't wait until inside if you have to have a programme. -
Car park at Stanmore fills very quickly and is a massive pain to get out of after the game. The access road is very tight squeeze and all you need is one car coming in and chaos is the result. Plently of street parking around Stanmore though - look at parking in Morecambe Gardens or Pangbourne Drive (SatNav), then walk from there to Stanmore tube..5 minutes Other option is to go down to Canons Park (same tube line) - there is a station car park on Donnefield Avenue. There are the car parks I normally use these when I go to Wembley for the NFL.. Neasden is also good for street parking (as mentioned before)..Don't be tempted to park in Tesco or IKEA car parks at Brent Park - you'll get a ticket if you do.. Watford Junction has a huge station car park - which has easy access back to the M1... Kings Langley alongside the M25 has a station car park - which is normally quiet on a weekend (on the same line as Watford Junction & Wembley Central). Leave plently of time getting down to London - there's normally some road works on the M1 at the weekend. Better option might be using the A1 down to the M25.. Anyone parking at Wembley Stadium will be held for approx. 45 minutes after the game before they release any cars. Please Note The council car parks in Wembley (on a match day) only allow 2 hours parking maximum - so you can't park in any of these and go to the game..

Transaction fee is postage...sorry forgot to clarify this..

Site was easy to use - however can imagine the site will slow down though the more people as accessing. Remember Hull are using the same process on their side of the website. Option gives you seating blocks you can choose - use the tab seating plan (this will gve you the category of the ticket) - you then get nominated seats in the block... You also only have 7 minutes to complete your purchase once you choose a block. For those who asked Transaction fee applies once to all tickets purchased at the time. Booking fee is £2.40 per ticket Transaction fee just £2.25 whether you are buying 1 or 8 tickets

Brighton cranked up the tannoy to create an atmosphere in the ground..Heard you couldn't hear the pitch side interviews because of this. The flags they put on every home seat got the fans going...Brighton did generate a constant noise - but hard to pick up over the noise we were making. Atmosphere was immense and makes you proud to be a Wednesday fan..At the end nobody wanted to leave either the stadium or the pitch...Brighton fans did though to their credit stay behind to applaud their own players - who sort of did a half lap of honour. Unreal - onwards and upwards..... WAWAW

What poor ref and linesman
bigsuffolkowl replied to Taximark's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
Pretty much disappointed that 22 players managed to try to spoil the Graham Salisbury show....surely we've all turned up just to see him... Maybe the FA assessor will agree that he managed to handle a difficult game well - but the game was far from agressive and wasn't difficult until Salisbury started to hand out cards like confetti. Still can't see how he managed to dish out 10 yellow cards and 2 reds. Thought the Hudderfield red was 'harsh' - still can't work out what Mattock did to get the 1st yellow - 2nd yellow was justified (hence the red was correct). However the performance of a 'spotlight' referee doesn't explain the 2nd goal we conceded. Doesn't get away from shocking defending again from us - no excuse for an unmarked free header in the 6 yard box. I also wasn't impressed with the let's take our time approach when they went down to 10 men. Moving the ball slowly across the back four - and not making use of the wings with quick ball is the way to break down a team with a man short - at least this is what we try every time this happens. Given we needed a goal it took an age for us to change and go 3 at the back (especially as they played for 65 minutes with just 1 up front) Anybody else think we haven't a clue how to play against 10 men. All in all the Salisbury show was what you expect every time he appears at a ground. He has the record so far for cards issued this season - you can see why. Anyone else wonder why the referee's name was missing from the matchday programme. At least it would have given a clue as to what we would expect to happen. I did like his handling of the blatant time wasting though - especially the 30 yards walk to get the towel to rub the ball before the Huddersfield throw ins. The mince across the pitch he carried out for the drop ball (when he waited till play stopped before blowing up) was what I expected. I also liked the drama of the 3 minutes delay to hand in the thrown object (whatever it was). He handled that like it was a hot coal that he'd found. All in all I thought he did everything he could to spoil what should have been a decent game of football - but he does this on a regular basis. No doubt he'll be promoted shortly to the Premier League panel. -
One word - Embarrassment
bigsuffolkowl replied to chickenboona's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
Can everyone get a grip and be realistic...Blackpool have come down from the Premier League and have a team they bought with some of this money. Six of their team last night have played at Premier League level.(1 in La Liga)..2 more have come out of the Liverpool & Man Utd reserves. So what exactly did people expect once they saw our team last night?. We also haven't been 'tearing up the opposition' playing our first eleven - so seven changes and we are going to wipe the floor with who exactly. It was obvious from our side last night where our priorites lie....cup would have been nice but it's not the aim for the season.. Be in the shake-up come April or 5th round of the cup......which would everyone prefer...I know where I'd like us to be... -
I've seen every game the guy has played and he disappears more than he puts in a performance. He only seems capable if he plays on the wing next to Megson, put him out of ear shot and he vanishes.. He is too much of a liability - we do end up playing with 10 men when he's on the pitch. His workrate is shocking and it does appear he plays on his terms. How many times has he over-dribbled the ball trying to beat 10 men to score the wonder goal and lost it to put the defense under pressure? How many times has he got into position and failed to lay off the pass? For a so called 'talented winger' - he can't deliver a telling cross. I did say get rid last season my mind hasn't changed....we can do better and should in January.
-
Is it just me that thinks - they will be fresh and up for the game ...Had it been us playing yesterday we'd be wiped out by kick off. Don't forget everyone ups their game against us - which is a huge problem for us - seeing as we only 'up our game' against the Blunts...

Missed out through money again
bigsuffolkowl replied to dave110285's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
Pretty much why Liverpool bought Andy Carroll when he was injured - it's called an investment...Rochdale needed the cash - we liked the player - he wanted to come....we bought him... Are we short of strikers - indeed we are - Are they all queuing up to join a league 1 side - sorry no they aren't - even if we were going to give them £7K a week... Given a choice of playing in the Championship or joining a massive league 1 club - then there's no contest. Players aren't interested in 'what might happen in 2 years time' or playing each week in front of a massive crowd - they are looking for what they can get now. If that means sitting on the bench and collecting £10K a week, or joining us and playing every week - then we've got no chance. It's also not a case of giving 1 player the big wage - before you know it you've got everyone else thinking they are worth the same deal. Trust the guys to do the right thing.... -
People though do have to realistic about the clubs ambitions - even Milan is starting to change his tune. He thought he was buying a 'sleeping giant' and the early quotes reflect that view. However he soon found out that the problems at hand were far greater than envisaged (thanks to the previous custodians). He does have a limited amount of cash and needs to spend this wisely (which I get the impression he will). He has an impressive track record of bringing success to the clubs he buys and making money at the end of the day - not many can say they achieve both. Unfortunately too many fans saw the cash arrive and thought - here comes our route back to good old days. I too hear many fans 'giving it large' and forecasting instantaneous success. If we don't finish 30 points clear of 2nd place - some will see the job done as a complete failure. The ambition for the club is to gain promotion by spending as little as possible to achieve this. Was promotion this season a pipe dream - unfortunately I think it is. I can see us reaching mid-table - could we do better - anything is possible. We do though with a little tinkering have a chance of doing better and the emphasis should be to get the best out of our resources.Could we do with more resources in key areas (sure), but at what cost ? It's more important that we get the right players (who want to do the job in hand) rather than those out to collect what may be a last payday - we've seen more than few of those in the last few years. We also aren't in the business of keeping our neighbours afloat - and I for one am happy we appear not to want to pay inflated wages or transfer fees (for those with short memories that was the start of the downward spiral last time) Finally sense appears to have broken out in the boardroom. Do we need to invest 'mega bucks' - no. Do we need to pick wisely - absolutely. Does everyone see us as a 'cash cow to milk' - unfortunately they do. The important thing to remember - Success can be achieved without 'splashing the cash' - buying success makes everyone happy whilst the money remains - however when the plug is pulled, then what. Give the men time to sort out the club - it took us over 11 years to get into the trouble Milan bought - it will take more than 11 months to get out of it !!

What exactly do people want Radio Sheffield to talk about on their sports programme ? The non-existing signings at Barnsley, Doncaster, (no cash to spend) - the Blunts (definitely no cash to spend) or us with some money to spend and Toytown with an asset (regardless of what they think he's worth)...Scott is out to get what he can - ALF is looking for a pay day (in case he flops) - which in the Championship having seen him play - is nigh on a stick on. There is naff all else happening in South Yorkshire - football-wise (maybe Radio Sheffield will spend some time next week in their progamme lamenting about the absence of the 'Rhinos band' from the game tomorrow - who will be at the rugby final at Wembley !! Good luck to Alf if he wants to go to Reading and warm their bench.....anybody think why no-one of any size has tried to sign him before ?

People need to get a grip on reality - I was reading the doom and gloom not many months ago about this club of ours going to the wall. Sure we put our gate money into the club and buy the shirt - but don't forget Mandaric has put in at least £8m of his own money to save us. as far as I'm concerned - both Milan & Paul have given me something to watch each week - when it looked like there would be nothing.. Milan knows what he's let himself in for. If he decides ALF or anyone else isn't worth the money, then that is his perogative. At the end of the day, he's the man expected to part with his cash - look at the cash he blew in January and the impact that had !! Let them both get on with resurrecting the club - at least we still have a club (unlike Plymouth who look like they may not).. This was never going to be a 'chuck £20m at it and buy promotion' - Milan will be looking at a return for his investment at some point in the future.. Remember he doesn't 'live and breathe the club' - at the end of the day - it's a business concern not a vocation....
