A full Hillsborough is a wonderful thing. It was great for the Plymouth game. For those occasions (too rare unfortunately) I wouldn't want to relocate. I dream it could be full every other week. And when I read terrible journalism like Ladyman's, my strong instinct, like many on here, is to react against it, defending my club and the stadium because I love them both.
But, objectively, our stadium is old-fashioned, views are blocked by pillars, the concourses aren't big enough, the toilet and catering facilities are poor, some of the seats are cramped, the north-west corner is redundant, blocks of seats can't be sold for safety reasons. I last sat in the West Stand for the 2012 Wycombe game and it affords a great view of three wonderful stands, but the infrastructure and facilities are awful. That stand should have been removed in the years immediately following the disaster. Its continued existence means we will constantly have to endure the sort of publicity we got when Newcastle came to town. Yes, it's unjust criticism in many ways, it feels like we're being picked on unfairly, but as long as the West Stand is there, it will continue to happen.
People will say, how can we afford to replace it? Wouldn't we rather spend what money we have on the team? The plan seems to be that we can redevelop the ground, in particular the West Stand, when we get back in the Premier League. But when will that be? It's 23 years and counting. We could conceivably be outside the Premier League for another 20 years and this thing will still be around our neck, never going away. Of course the disaster and the innocent lives that were lost must never be forgotten, but unfortunately our club, by not understanding and acknowledging the massive symbolism of the still-standing Leppings Lane stand, tunnel and all, and by not having dealt with it, has made us an easy target, and it's holding us back.
I don't know how, or how to afford it, but it's time for the club to make some sort of statement of intent, rather than continuing to pretend there isn't an issue.
