Last nights meeting with Chansiri
Buxtongent replied to @owlstalk's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
Who in their right mind, would invest in, let alone buy, a business forecast to lose £30M in the next financial year? And , while not being a Chansiri fan, think carefully. We are a club with a recent record of just having scraped promotion from a virtually certaIn position of Winners to nearly also-rans. We have a superb fan base, but sadly one which knows the need for replacement players (a fa from cheap alternative ), are ensured a better brand of entertainment, but still want to pay less for the product. Maybe Chansiri's get out would be to cut his losses, offer a cheap Fans Buy-Out, let the Fans run the club, and retreat to his native thailand. -
Has anyone noticed the irony of thefirst two topics on this site? What do we want? Top class players (who incidentally do not come cheap) What is our second want? Cheaper prices . So , we want a larger wages bill, but also seem unprepared to pay for the priviledge. Don't you find this a little ironic?

Despite all the triumph and celebration, one thing is missing - - - - - comments from our Lord Snooty. What's the decision from our noble Lord, or was everything finally too much?

It's fine for us to admit we were lucky

A couple of points spring to mind. The first is an old grudge of mine. We should never have been at Wembley in the first place. The whole set-up is a League, in which the teams performing consistently through the season are automatically promoted. It should not be , in any way, a 'Cup -style' competition. The FA run a perfectly acceptable version of this format. Results should be judged on a full season This season, FL Div 1 has proved numerous points. Three teams have stood head and shoulders above the rest. Had the result been reversed on Mon, it would have resulted in one team, who over the season, played 46 games, and won the equivalent of 3 LESS matches (plus 1 draw ) than the rival team. Is this justice? The whole 'play-off' system is farcical. and nothing but a cash-cow for the TV and Authorities. The second is the controversial use/misuse of VAR. It is no good saying what part it played in the final. Its use is stated in its name - Visual Aid to Referee. It does not take away the fact that the decision is finally the Referee's, and in both cases it simply confirmed, or refused to overturn, the decision made by the Ref. In this case, the Ref didn't make any snap decisions. He carefully considered in his own mind his decision, before acting. he then used VAR to confirm his decision. Rant over. As the Umpire said to the outgoing batsman, complaining he was never out - 'Look in the scorebook, Pal' -
Man of the Match - Peterborough away
Buxtongent replied to Lord Snooty's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
Why, Oh why, whenever we get a performance like this, do we blame The Owner, the Ref, the Manager, and never the true culprits . . . . .THE PLAYERS. I'm sure that neither Chansiri, nor Moore, nor anyone else tells the players to go out and play like a load of crap. This same team has achieved a total of 96 points, the equivalent of 32 wins out of a possible 46 matches, yet since the end of their 23 unbeaten run, they have managed to loose against the likes of Forest Green and others. It does not make sense that either the Owner nor the Manager did not want Championship football next season. I cannot understand, nor believe that the players didn't either, so what went wrong? The blame, though, must surely lie with the ones who go onto the field. They certainly have not given 100% as they were doing. -
Is anyone of the same opinion as me? I say this NOT as adisappointed Wednesday supporter, though I am, but as a defender of 'Football'. Surely there is a distinct difference between the aims of 'Cup' and 'League' football. Surely the rewards for cup and league football are completely different. In a Cup format, the results are decided on a one-off situation. In the League, surely the idea is that the best teams are the consistent ones over the full league season. Quite rightly, the top two are automatically promoted. Why then ,should a team who have attained a points advantage over other teams, have then to go into an extra Cup style format? They idea of a play-off was first devised when the Premiership was extended, was initially to be for one year , but proved to be a money spinner. This is the only reason for its continued exsistence. Several clubs beside Wednesday have proved their superiority over a season, only to fail at this final hurdle. Ithas happened all too often that a team will be promoted over another who have obtained at least 6 points more in the season. nd that's the equivalentof winning 2 more matches in the season. Surely the time has come to either promote 3 or to have a play off in which ALL the top 6 teams are involved. And I hold this opinion whoever the teams may be.

Most of these rules are already in place, but Referees are unwilling to enforce them, often due to lack of support at FA levels. We often despise our friends in Rugby Union, but I feel that many of their rules could and should be implemented into soccer to our benefit. For instance, in a scuffle, the Ref will blow then retire a short distance, and call over the offending player and the Captain. This could be done n soccer under the existing rules, with outside players being cautioned or yellow carded for 'ungentlemanly conduct'. As for the 'head injury' any player doing so should go off for a medical assessment and not return until passed fit to do so. As for VAR, once again we can learn from ourcolleagues of other codes in which the Ref goes to the Independent Video Ref, and asks 'My decision is a goal. Is there sufficient evidence for me to change that decision?. Players will push the interpretation of the rule to their limit. It's called human nature, cheating , whatever.

Forgive me for asking, but do we have any good players (with the exception of Bannan and Palmer)? This website appears to be following a side that has NOT gone 22 league games without defeat, and is currently struggling to avoid relegation. What must it be like to support a side currently in the top 3, guaranteed a play-off spot, and with a fair chance of automatic promotion?

Maybe, but Plymouth have to play Barnsley, yet! This could be a crucial game. And don't forget, promotion is a matter of simply matching the performances of the top clubs. -
Comment from a Luton Fan who listens and watches football. - 'Good game last night. Draw seemed about right, but your lads hit the post with last kick.'
-
Well. At least our task has been simplified We MUST win on Wednesday, then all we have to do is match the Plymouth results for the last few games . The players must know this. It's in their hands Surprisingly no-one wants another shot at a visit to Wembley (unless they're a Blade)
-
Maybe we should all stop panicking and leave it to Moore. Everyone said we would crash without Bannan, yet we were undefeated. With a raft of injuries and the odd suspension, we have just played 2 of the top six teams, one we held to a draw, the other ended our 23 match unbeaten run at their ground. Our recent run is comparable to our competitors, and our run in easier on paper. Don't forget that some of the matches are between runners, so they are going to take points from each other. I am a believer in 'points in hand' rather than 'games in hand., but I am sure that Moore will sleep easier than the Plymouth manager tonight.

The Noise !, the Passion !....the sense of belonging .

It simply proves my comment to my daughter, when she told me recently that her new Boss was an ex-Wednesdayite. My reply was 'There's no such thing. Once, always! -
Just pay the best tribute to Wednesday's finest Captain, and a true gentleman, inthenonly way he would want. Go and play your hearts out, or cheer til you're hoarse. .

Shouldn't the club be contacting all clubs regarding the reduced capacity of the End, with its reason for reduction, and asking that any complaints be made to Newcastle Football Club?.
-
Why, whenever the issue of the Leppings Lane end arises, are most complaits about the stand? How many casualties were in the stand? Surely they were all on the lower , then Terrace? Despite Wednesday complying with all sanctions, people will come and then complain. If they don't like the idea of crowds at a match, there is a simple answer - STAY AT HOME
-
Why all this talk about a new stand? What do we need a full-blown Grandstand for? Surely a far more sensible use of precious money would be the demolition of the West Stand, and its replacement by a purpose-built end which would include an extension of the lower level of seating and provision of facilities behind, all topped off with a cantilever roof. Simple and effective. It works on all the other 3 sides of the ground. Why should away fans expect to be accommodated on multi levels? Surely a six-sevenK seated enclosure with appropriate services should be relatively cheap.

Don't know, but they must be doing me good. Every time I open Owlstalk I find Sheffield Wednesday are topping League 1. Oh,and incidentally, whenever they take a blood sample, they gasp in astonishment that it comes out BLUE. Don't worry, Mate. Old Father Time will catch up on you, too!

Normally, I would have avoided TV Quiz programs, but being interned in a care home and having little to do but watch TV, I have become entranced by 'Only Connect', and watched tonight's final. This was won conclusively by a team entitled STRYGIFORMS (interested in Owls) and having one of it's three members being a self-confessed Wednesdayite. They started off slowly, but gathered speed and won easily. Is this the omen of things to come?

The towels are usually carried by Ball Boys, and to my knowledge, there is no restriction on a player wiping a ball prior to a throw-in. It's part of the more affluent days. and a system used in Rugby Union. At one time, the players simply used their shirts.

I well remember that song , especially the second line :- 'To the top of the league, where we belong!' A favourite with the crowds during the '50,s 'Yo-Yo years' -
SWFC hoodies - What do you think of these
Buxtongent replied to @owlstalk's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
Far too OTT I obtained one of the white jackets, and , on wearing it, had numerous cmpliments. Can't see me wearing one of these. Don't forget the Wednesday fan base is multi-aged, and many of the 'Prawn Sandwich' brigade like to wear clothes which are fashionable without being over-trendy -
League table since Plymouth defeat
Buxtongent replied to Daniele Giovanni's topic in Sheffield Wednesday Matchday
I never count 'games in hand', since they still have to be won. However, the current position is still that we are top and with a far superior GD to theother clubs. It does mean, however, that we cannot afford to take our foot off the gas. That said, I know who will be most worried, and for once it isn't us. -
I'm not interested in what Bolton do between now and the season end. Only ONE thing matters. That WE do not falter! The promotion issue lies in the hands of OURSELVES. If we keep up our form, we have the thing that matters - not games but points in hand.
