Thank god I've heard one other sensible voice point out that, the fact that the manager and team have to focus on their own results, doesn't mean that we have to as fans. (As an aside, it actually may be key for the team to break the 'focus on our own results' cliche late on the last day, as other results may very well dictate whether we need to hold for a draw, or need to win)

Hopefully we can just win both games and make ourselves safe, but, in the likely event that that doesn't happen, alot is going to go on the circumstances of other games. One big worry is that Norwich go to Birmingham on the last day with their playoff place 100% safe, and able to rest into it. The only team that can pressure them is Hull. We badly need Hull to match Norwich's result this weekend, and so that probably means we need them to win. It would put them only with the tiny chance of a goal difference overhaul, but there could be the world of difference on the last day between Norwich being 100% safe and not 100% safe, and so Hull vs Ipswich is far more important to us than it seems.

Yeah the Charlton one is one of the most frustrating memories of the last ten years, given what was possible. I actually think that, despite years of crap, we've been reasonably clinical over the last couple of decades. Four opportunities to get out of league one: Lost a semi to Sunderland, but took the other three. Five playoff campaigns. Winning two of them is a good hit rate. Every time we've gone down (apart from maybe Palace 2010) we've done it by a distance. The times we've been just about good enough to stay up, we have, like on the last days of the season against Norwich and Middlesbrough

Can you give any example of when anything like this has ever happened? It's a myth that fans of every team believe is something they do

It's too massive an opportunity in the draw. Yes, it's a banana skin. Yes, we should respect them. But, let's be real; if we get past Coventry, we are playing a team in the 6th tier at home, to get to the quarter finals of the FA Cup. We will never have such an opportunity. And, it doesn't make as much of a difference to the league as we think; it may even give us a boost.

No one is going to take away the victory if the fans admit we were a little lucky. It doesn't diminish the victory; it doesn't mean we didn't deserve it. The precise detail of what exactly is "clear and obvious," and whether it should be a yellow, red, or orange card doesn't particularly matter. Decisions, from the ref, and even from VAR, are more random than that. Both could have gone either way, and both tosses of the coin landed in our favour. Furthermore, the red of course never happens if the penalty is given 60 seconds before. And that's fine. Do we deserve this promotion? Probably. But because of a fight to end spirit, a 96 point season, and an epic comeback in the semi. If we got a little lucky in the final, let's admit it. It doesn't change the fact, we're going up.

Very possibly, VAR will make a crucial difference to the game on Monday. This will inevitably leave one group of fans complaining "we shouldn't have it for just one game, and not for the others." This complaint is of course valid, but there is a far worse fate awaiting us than just having it for one game. They're never going to take it away from the final, and one day we won't face this one game inconsistency, because it will be there for all 46. The fateful day it comes to the football league, it... 1) WILL make the game fairer. But only slightly. And, crucially, leaving us still never able to get perfection. 2) Will significantly impact our ability to celebrate a goal, throwing some element of doubt on almost every goal. Imagine the Palmer 4-4 goal from the Kop in a VAR era. It comes with doubt. It can never be the same. Make your voices heard against VAR. Don't sing against VAR only if it goes against us- that is simply interpreted as sour grapes. Fight against the 46 games, not against the 1.

No, it is not at all that VAR may have overturned it. There was no doubt at all about legitimacy of the goal. The problem is, there is no way of knowing that in the ground. We have experienced one of the greatest moments we will as a football fan in the 97th minute tonight. Utter relief, joy, disbelief. VAR changes that. Even when the goal is fine. Even when the goal doesn't "go to VAR." Instead of all those positive emotions, VAR brings uncertainty. Instead of a joyous pitch invasion, everyone half celebrates, and then stands there in anxious doubt. A doubt relieved only in anticlimax, when the game kicking off finally confirms the goal. Fight against VAR. Once it is in, there is nothing we can do to stop it. It will take away moments like the Palmer goal. It will change the way we watch Wednesday forever, and only for the worse.

I would say our very late season, or last day, games over the years have actually gone completely to expectation. Games we "shouldn't win" Palace 2010 Derby 2021 (They were both in a false position as they had both been docked points) Failed to win them both. Games we "should win" Norwich (on the beach) 2009, to stay up Boro (on the beach) 2013, to stay up Carlisle at home, Brentford away, Wycombe at home, 2012 Cardiff at home, to make playoffs, 2016 Ipswich away, to make playoffs, 2017 Won them all.

It sounds about right. But it's something that fans of every club say. And, in our case, it's actually not true at all. What are these famous occasions of Wednesday choking over the years? Of Wednesday pulling defeat from the jaws of victory? I'll give you relegation in 1990; that was a choke. That's 33 years ago. Since then, I challenge you to name a season that we've choked. Yes, there have been plenty of seasons where we've just been outright bad. However, for our 4 relegations, despite a couple of last day encounters, we haven't messed anything up at all; we've just been poor, and deserved to go down. In fact, Wednesday's only other battle for automatic promotion in league one was very much the opposite of messing it up. Yes, in 2012, we were helped by events at the Lane, but we had to nail the run-in ourselves; and did. You may say that we messed up 2016 or 2017. I would say, we've had four playoff campaigns this century; made the final twice of four; won the final one of two. That isn't indicative of anything. That is, in fact, bang on par. It wouldn't be like Wednesday to mess it up at all. Wednesday are going to be fine.
